Background

This was an assignment that explored the usage of grids and grid compositions

Research

I chose to do a painting around hanafuda cards because I remember growing up with my mom playing a game with her friends. The cards were created in Japan. The deck consisted of 48 cards ith 12 suits. each suit is tied to a flower and there are 4 cards for each suit. It was a gambling tool to avoid getting caught since the government would ban gambling playing cards.

Sketches

For my sketches, I made the composition seem like the cards would be laid down on the floor, or look like a pattern. 

Color Iterations

I decided to go for the first sketch because I was thinking about the game my mom played a lot, Go Stop. The game was mainly a color matching game where you match the suits in your hand and the ones on the playing field. Then, I sketched out two color iterations for the painting.

Final

For the final, I ended up using a gold background with the background colors of the cards being light blue.
